After a long night facing a hack-a-Dwight defense, Lakers center Dwight
Howard might have another waiting at Toyota Center.

Rockets acting head coach Kelvin Sampson said he is not opposed to
intentionally fouling Howard, who made nine of 21 free throws against the
Magic on Sunday, though the Rockets did not employ the strategy last month in
Los Angeles.

“Even when I was in Milwaukee, we did it,” Sampson said. “If you have a
choice between giving him a dunk or wrapping him up, that’s an easy
decision. Make him make his free throws. We’ve done that with other players,
too. I remember when we were in Milwaukee, we beat Dallas one time playing
hack-a-Brendan (Haywood). I’m sure teams in the past played hack-a-Omer
(Asik). Omer’s kind of slid out of the hack-a category, though. He’s
started to make his free throws.”

The Rockets on Monday recalled rookie forward Terrence Jones from their NBA
Development League affiliate. He played just two games with the Rio Grande
Valley Vipers.

Taking advantage of the rule change put in place last season to remove limits
on how often teams can shuttle first- and second-year players to and from the
D-League, Jones played two games this past weekend for the Rio Grande Valley
Vipers — averaging 22.5 points and 17.5 rebounds — just as fellow rookies
Donatas Motiejunas and Scott Machado did the previous weekend.

“I just wanted to do what is better for myself and to help the team,” Jones
said. “That was going to the D-League. That’s what it was for. I’m happy
to be back.”


The Lakers might use Kobe Bryant differently than in the past, with Bryant
frequently handling the ball on the pick-and-roll as he did in tearing
through the Rockets last month in Staples Center, but some things have not
changed.

“Kobe’s always Kobe,” said Rockets forward Chandler Parsons, most often
assigned to defend Bryant. “He’s one of the best players to ever play the
game.“No matter what they say about him, no matter how old he’s getting,
