時間 Sun Jul 22 23:11:18 2012

Ultimate Rockets » Faith, hometown help new Rocket Jeremy Lin escape the Linsanity Faith, hometown help new Rocket Jeremy Lin escape the Linsanity ...
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Jeremy Lin grew up in Midtown Palo Alto, an
unpretentious neighborhood with wide streets, lush parks, good schools and
California ranch and mid-century homes that sell for $1 million and up,
barely upper middle class, if that, in one of the country’s most expensive
cities.

Lin could have biked to the home where Mark Zuckerberg and friends started
Facebook or to Packard’s Garage, the birthplace of Hewlett-Packard. A short
drive would have taken him to the headquarters of Apple, Google or Yahoo. But
Lin was less interested in Silicon Valley superstars such as Steve Jobs,
Larry Page, Sergei Brin and Zuckerberg than he was in NBA superstars such as
Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan and Yao Ming. Their posters were
the ones on his bedroom wall.
When he was in the eighth grade, the teenager known on basketball courts
around the region as “Little Jeremy” because he was, well, little, told his
pastor at the Chinese Church in Christ in nearby Mountain View that he
someday would become an NBA player.
Thus began one of the unlikeliest stories in NBA history, perhaps in the
history of sports.
He was a star player at Palo Alto High School but still too small to earn a
scholarship to a major college program, went to Harvard, played well there by
Ivy League standards but was undrafted by the NBA, tried out in the summer
league, earned some offers to sit at the end of the bench, was cut by one
team and then another, hooked on with the New York Knicks and, a couple of
months later, LINSANITY!
Not only had he become one of the most recognizable basketball players in the
world, but he was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the
world by Time magazine and as one of the eight most influential
Chinese-Americans by Vivid, a Chinese magazine.
Another chapter in his story was added last week when Lin, 23, became the new
point guard for the Rockets, one of the teams that cut him seven months ago,
after the Knicks decided not to match the Rockets’ offer of $25.1 million
for three years.
“Never in a million years would I have seen this coming,” said one of his
training partners and a former high school teammate, Blake Schultz. “Anyone
who says they did is making that up.”
Walk onto the campus today at Palo Alto High School, better known as Paly,
and you can’t miss signs with directions to GSQ – Galileo Summer Quest. It
is an annual summer camp for high schools students interested in subjects
such as digital filmmaking, video game design and web design.
The high school is ranked 83rd in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
Its goal is to qualify at least 85 percent of its students for the UC
(University of California) or Cal-State systems. Students score well above
the national mean in critical reading, math and writing and in SAT scores. In
2010, Paly produced a record 46 National Merit Scholar semifinalists.
U.S. News and World Report評選為全國第83名。
That is the expectation in a city of 64,403 considered one of the most
educated in the country. But with the expectation also comes pressure.
In the Christian testimonies he often delivers, one of which has been viewed
55,000 times on You Tube, Lin credits the balance he was able to maintain to
God.
“His fingerprints are all over my life, from top to bottom,” Lin says.
Parents supportive
Lin’s parents emigrated from Taiwan in 1977 and his father, Gie-ming Lin,
happened to catch an NBA game on television and “fell in love with
basketball.”
The three Lin boys – Jeremy is the middle son – were not discouraged from
playing basketball. His younger brother, Joseph, is a guard at Division III
Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., and, by all accounts, even Jeremy’s, is
the better shooter.
“My parents were very supportive,” Lin said by phone from Houston last
week. “They let me do pretty much anything, as long as I made A’s in school.
” That and practice his violin.
“His parents definitely put academics first,” said Arne Lim, who teaches in
the high school’s math department and was adviser to the Christian Club that
Lin co-presided over as a senior. “The only time I can think of when they
maybe pushed him too hard is when they put him in the highest level of
calculus when he was a junior. He needed another year before he was ready for
that.
“But I think he turned out to be a pretty regular kid.”
Lin agreed with that “regular kid” assessment.
“I spent a lot of time with friends, hanging out, playing video games,
playing cards, going to movies, anything that was legal,” he said.
Most articles about him during the two months this year – February and March
– when Linsanity was at its peak in New York made him out to be almost
perfect.
In his testimony, he tells audiences that he was anything but as a child.
“I made my Sunday school teachers cry,” he says. “They’d give me prizes
and I’d throw them on the ground. I was a mess.”
But his parents were religious – his grandfather was a Christian minister in
Taiwan – and Lin began to become serious about it when he was baptized as a
ninth-grader.
“That’s when I started really wanting to go to church,” he said. “It wasn
’t like my parents had to make me go. I looked forward to being there, and
it became a big part of my life.”
Lin says his faith was tested at least twice.
Once was during his junior year, when the cockiness and stubbornness that he
was known for as a child returned to the surface. Doc Scheppler, who later
became Lin’s shooting coach, said Lin became “practically uncoachable.”
Doc Sheppler,
But during a pickup game at the YMCA, Lin broke his ankle and couldn’t play
again that season.
A turning point
He called it a turning point “because it humbled me and made me realize that
I couldn’t take anything in life for granted,” he said.
He returned for his senior season and led Paly to the state Division II
championship in an upset over Santa Ana Mater Dei. Still, the major colleges
didn’t recruit him, not even Stanford, which is located across the street
from Palo Alto High School. Walk out of the gym and you can see the Hoover
Tower.
“Jeremy was so small and not very strong,” his basketball coach at Paly,
Peter Diepenbrock, said. “You couldn’t blame the coaches who came to see
him play. Not even Harvard was that interested.”
Lin learned early after arriving at Harvard that he would have to gain
strength and began an intensive workout program that he still follows. No one
could have predicted that he would add height as well as muscle. His father
is 5-6, and neither of his brothers is 6-0. Lin grew to 6-3 in college and
now weighs 212 pounds.
Lin’s increased size along with his skills earned him an invitation to play
for the Dallas Mavericks’ summer league team and eventually a contract with
his favorite team, the Golden State Warriors.
“One day, I wasn’t a big deal, and the next day everyone is congratulating
me on making it to the NBA,” he said. “I said, ‘OK, I could live this life.
That was the second time he says his faith was tested.
“I was humbled very, very quickly,” he says in his testimony. “The only
time I played was when we were up by 20 points, which wasn’t very often, or
down by 20 points. I didn’t have my swagger on the court.”
The Warriors sent Lin down three times to their developmental team in Reno,
Nev. He keeps a diary, and during a nine-hour bus ride from Reno to
Bakersfield, Calif., he wrote that he wished he had never signed with the
Warriors.
“I felt embarrassed and like a failure,” he says. “But then I remembered
to start trusting God. For me to not trust God is crazy.”
It was one year later, the Warriors had let him go and he had spent 12 days
of preseason with the Rockets, that Lin found himself in New York. The next
two months he was a one-man ESPN highlight reel. Now he is a very rich Texan.
But his home is still Palo Alto. When he’s there, he still lives with his
parents, sleeping in the same bedroom where he once had all those posters of
NBA players. When he was in New York, he slept on the couch of his older
brother, Joshua, who is a dental student there.
All grown up 真正長大
Lin spends a lot of time in Palo Alto working out in a local gym and
practicing his shooting with Scheppler. Scheppler is a high school girls
basketball coach in nearby Pinewood. The player Scheppler said was once “
uncoachable” now says he never would have made it without them.
“I wasn’t a great listener, especially in high school,” Lin said. “I’ve
grown up a lot, matured since then.”
His friends, mostly his former high schools teammates, haven’t noticed much
of a change in him, though. They said he still hangs out with them, playing
video games and cards and making runs to In-N-Out Burger.
When it became clear a few days ago that he was going to be a
multimillionaire after signing the offer sheet from the Rockets, he made one
small change to his lifestyle.
He told his parents he was turning one of the spare bedrooms into a man-cave
for himself and his friends.
He drove to Ikea for the furnishings and then returned home to assemble them
by himself.
