But the win placed the Mavericks 3 1/2 games up on the Warriors (three in the lo
ss column) and made it extremely difficult for Golden State to win the tiebreake
r. Even if the Warriors win the next two games against the Mavericks — tying th
e head-to-head at 2-2 — the next tiebreaker is conference record. The Mavericks
 are 22-18 against West competition, and the Warriors are 17-23.

avericks, the three teams sitting ahead of them at sixth, seventh and eighth, le
ngthening their climb.

 control of ninth, which would at least give them home-court advantage in a No.
9 versus No. 10 elimination game.




But the Warriors’ target has never been ninth. Exiting the break, it was sixth.
 But the New Orleans Pelicans have played too well and the Suns and Kings have s
tabilized enough to distance themselves far enough away. It could still be withi
n reach if the Warriors rattle off something like 13 or 14 wins in their final 1
7 games, but who is ready to predict that? Here are some of the teams still left
 on their schedule: Lakers twice, Mavericks twice, at Miami Heat, at Minnesota T
imberwolves, at Orlando Magic, vs. Pelicans.




“Yeah, it feels daunting,” Brandin Podziemski said. “Just for the fact that y
ou don’t want to be the 10th seed. The 11th seed is, I think, four or five game
s behind us. So for us to get that low I don’t think is going to happen. But yo
u don’t want to be the 10th seed and have to play two road games before you get
 into an actual series.”

That’s the reality staring the Warriors in the face. Even though they’ve been
one of the league’s better teams, record-wise, over the past six weeks, all the
 accumulated early-season sins combined with this recent 1-3 stretch have placed
 them on the bumpiest playoff path possible.
