Frank Vogel was not the Los Angeles Lakers' first choice for head coach, but
he was the perfect man for the job.

Vogel helped lead the Lakers to the championship, no small feat given the
2019-20 season's turbulence. For the Lakers, that included the Daryl
Morey-China preseason controversy, Kobe Bryant's tragic death, the pandemic,
and then the bubble.

While the Lakers were led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the best
superstar pairing in the NBA, and a rock-solid defense, even Lakers players
believe their roster wouldn't have worked without Vogel's leadership.

"If Frank Vogel wasn't the coach, I don't know if it would have worked,"
veteran Lakers forward Jared Dudley said on Bill Simmons' podcast. "I don't

Dudley said that Vogel had no ego and knew how to manage the roster,
including star players, role players, and several big personalities. For
instance, Dudley said that Vogel would sometimes let arguments between
players go on until they died down, rather than interrupting, which Dudley
said other coaches would do because of their egos.

Dudley said Vogel's scouting reports were the best he's seen in his 13
seasons in the NBA.

"The preparation we had was phenomenal," Dudley said. "The best I've had in
the league, and I've been with great coaches."

Dudley said the Lakers didn't practice often, so their film sessions were
crucial. In the bubble, Dudley said the Lakers would have information on all
of their opponents, from how many times a player would drive per game, which
direction they would go, how many dribbles they would take before shots, and
more.

Dudley said while facing the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the
playoffs, the Lakers players got such detailed scouting reports that James
actually applauded the report.

Dudley 說在季後賽第一輪面對波特蘭拓荒者之時，
湖人隊的球員都拿到了這般鉅細靡遺的球探報告，而 James 事實上對報告大表讚賞。


"I remember LeBron clapping it up, like, 'That's a hell of a scout. That's a
hell of a job.'

The Lakers' first choice for head coach was Tyronn Lue, the Cleveland
Cavaliers' head coach when they won the 2016 championship. However, they lost
out on Lue when they reportedly low-balled him on money and contract length.

湖人隊總教練本來的第一選擇是 Tyronn Lue，
他是當克里夫蘭騎士贏得 2016年總冠軍時，當時騎士隊的總教練。

然而他們因為低估了 Lue 對於價碼，以及合約長度的要求而失去了這名人選。


After interviewing Monty Williams, who took the Phoenix Suns coaching staff,
the Lakers hired Vogel. They named Jason Kidd, who also interviewed for the
head-coaching job and reportedly impressed, as the lead assistant, leaving
many to believe Vogel would have Kidd breathing down his neck.

在訪談過後來接任鳳凰城太陽隊總教練的 Monty Williams 之後，
湖人隊最後聘請了 Vogel。

而他們同時任命了 Jason Kidd 擔任首席助教，
他同樣了也參與了總教練職位的競逐。而且據說內容令人印象深刻。

Such circumstances wouldn't necessarily lead to a productive start for a new
head coach, but Vogel landed on his feet, thanks, in part, to James's buy-in.

這樣的局勢對一個全新走馬上任的總教練來說可不是什麼好的開頭，
但是 Vogel還是站穩了腳步，部分原因，是要多虧了 James對他表達的支持。


James attended Vogel's introductory press conference — an important display
of support.

James 親自出席了介紹新科教練 Vogel的新聞發表會 － 這是一次強力支持的表現。


According to ESPN's Zach Lowe, James and the team practiced hard during
training camp, going through drills at full-speed, diving on the floor for
loose balls, and competing with one another. James was motivated, and whether
it was from missing the playoffs in 2018-19, or perhaps from acquiring Davis
in the offseason, he followed Vogel's order.

根據 ESPN 的 Zach Lowe報導，James 和整支球隊在訓練營中進行了相當艱苦的訓練，

According to Lowe, Vogel was not afraid to call out James in film sessions,
and James would accept it and correct it on the floor.

Such buy-in has a ripple effect on teammates. Vogel, a coach known for his
defensive principles, had everyone on the team focused and excited about the
defense.

Vogel was on Lowe's podcast "The Lowe Post" and spoke about coaching his way
instead of appeasing anyone on the team.

"My family, having moved around a lot, and this being my third head-coaching
job, I really just wanted to go for it. I wanted to lay it all out there and
be unafraid and really coach my way. Because a lot of times, you get coaching
jobs in the NBA, and you want to bend to appease your front office, you're
going to bend to appease your players. Sometimes you don't always get to
coach your way for various reasons — you want the job security, you want to
not have to move your family, all these types of things. My family and I had
been through a lot, so I was going to do it my way and live with the results."


「我全家的人，已經跟著我到處搬家好多次，
  這是我第三份的總教練職位，我真的想要的，就是努力完成我的任務。

  所以你就想要討好管理階層，你想要彎下腰討好你的球員。
  有的時候，你總是因為各式各樣的原因，沒有辦法貫徹你自己的執教方式－
  你想要保持工作穩定，你想要自己的家庭不用顛沛流離到處搬家，諸如此類原因。」
